2002 Eastern Sierra Century and Double Century - June 15, 2002 |
Eastern Sierra Century and Double Century:
The Double: 138 double century riders came out to enjoy the most beautiful of our Planet Ultra events. After a fast, flat warm up through the flatlands of the Owens River region the real fun began
Up into the incredible Eastern Sierras!
Climbing from Round Valley to Crowley Lake, riders ascended the Old Sherwin Grade through pinion pine and juniper woodlands while following Lower Rock Creek on the way to Mono County and the heartland of the Eastern Sierra. After cresting Sherwin Grade, a rider friendly 1800' climb, riders got their first look at the incredible views of Mt. Ritter and Mt. Banner, and the serrated ridge of the Minarets in the northern distance. Riders continued north to Lake Crowley and the grassy bed of Long Valley.
The weather was perfect for the ride into Mammoth Lakes. After a quick run through town, riders headed north via the Mammoth Scenic Route. The scent of pine was wonderful and the downhill very rewarding! The next destination was the breathtaking June Lake loop. We caught some riders stopped at the June Lake café indulging in very decadent, calorific, heavenly smelling, gooey cinnamon buns!
After 104 miles and 7,200 feet of climbing, riders arrived at Mono Lake County Park to enjoy the magnificent view while partaking of Subway sandwiches and all the usual wide variety of drinks and snacks. But there's more to come! Leaving Mono Lake, the temperatures were rising as riders climbed up to Sagehen Summit, then descended through red lava canyons into Benton. It was over 100 degrees as riders headed back through the Chalfant Valley and to the finish in Bishop.
The Century: A small band of hearty century riders headed out of town towards Round Valley in a friendly pack. From there they joined the double route to beautiful Crowley Lake. At Benton Crossing Road, the century route split off - and headed up the back side of Crowley Lake en route to Benton Hot Springs, Benton, Chalfant and then back to Bishop. All smiles at the finish line, in spite of the HOT afternoon.
