Grand Slam Hoodoo 500 KOM Challenge

In spite of the super cold temperatures and crazy winds, Heartbreak 2006 was amazing! 69 double century riders and 261 century riders (our largest combined field ever - by nearly THREE TIMES) bundled up and hit the road to enjoy some of the most scenic, quiet and beautiful roads in Southern California. Challenging climbs, breathtaking views, quiet roads, and long, rewarding descents, are what makes this course one of the best in California.

Congratulations to the following thirteen riders who earned their Planet Ultra Grand Slam, and received a very cool, special edition Grand Slam coffee mug, by completing the Heartbreak Double Century: Linda Bott, Kley Cardona, Jay Carroll, Paolo De Rezende, Charles Griffice, Andrew Gustafson, Rick Jacobson, Brian Kingman, Tony Martinez, William Murphy, Tom O'Kane, Mike Sturgill, and Mike Warren. Speaking of the Grand Slam, we have a great new jersey in the works! Click here for a preview!

Our hats off to the ten double riders who also earned official finisher status of the Planet Ultra King of the Mountains Century Challenge, and received the exclusive finisher polka-dot socks: Chuck Bramwell, Jay Carroll, Andrew Gustafson, Francis Ignacio, Tony Martinez, Karl Rudnick, Travis Sittard, Scott P. Smith, George Vargas and Donald Zweibel. Click here to see the 2006 King of the Mountains Final Results.

Special kudos to Mark Dehanke, of the Arizona Bullshifters, who rode Heartbreak as his 50th lifetime double century! We're so pleased that Mark chose to ride a Planet Ultra event to reach this milestone. Mark will be inducted into the California Triple Crown Hall of Fame in September! Way to go, Mark!!!

As everyone knows, we're making a big effort to keep everyone safe and legal, especially regarding righting in hours of darkness. We've been forced to DQ several riders this year for riding without lights, front or rear, or both, and for not wearing reflective ankle bands. We hate to do that.... So we really appreciate the riders who come prepared, and really "get it" when it comes to being visible when it's dark out. That's why we decided to recognize and give kudos to riders who light up at night. At each double, we'll award a $25 ride credit to the best-lit rider. For Heartbreak, that's Earl Magpiong. Earl had a super bright headlight, a nice red taillight, reflective ankle bands, shoe reflectors, and a vest which reflected front and back. We saw him from way down the road - and were so impressed that we had to pull over and tell him "thanks." So, thanks again, Earl. You're a fine example for all the riders on this Planet who pedal along the dark roads.

Heartfelt thanks the the wonderful volunteers who made this Heartbreak Double Century particularly awesome!
